A 3D study of the CO2 naturally stocked: the case of Minero-Florida block in the Sabinas basin, north of Mexico

Abstract

We present a method to calculate the 3D distribution of CO2 formed and/or stocked in the block Minero-Florida (MF) of the Sabinas basin. This basin is located in the northern part of Mexico, 180 km from the border with the USA. It is a basin producer of natural CH4 gas which contains more than 5km of Mesozoic sedimentary rocks deposited in a marine environment. The construction of the spatial distribution maps of CO2 is supported by the 3D seismic interpretation of the block MF and its interpretation as a 3D structural model built with GOCAD geomodeling software. CO2 data consist of punctual measurements in five wells, geochemical model results and of the CO2 resulting from the tests carried out on geochemistry and petrographic characterization of rocks from various sedimentary formations and their fluids. The CO2 and CH4 volumetric maps were generated as: a) in-situ gas analysis, b) obtained by artificial maturation laboratory, c) generated from the theorical Van Krevelen, d) resulting from the sample analysis on Rock-Eval pyrolysis, e) calculated with geochemical Petromod software. Results we also conducted an assessment of the best exploitation location to drill to new wells in the area, considering the CO2 associated with the CH4. This work will support meaningfully the decision-making of exploration of geochemical engineering, in view of the location of future drilling of wells. Our methodology can be adapted also to other areas of oil exploration.
