Modeling PDE Using gOcad

in: 11th gOcad Meeting

Abstract

The possibilities of GOCAD for modeling Partial Differential Equations (PDE) are investigated. When modelling PDE applied to geological problems, several steps have been identified: (1) the description ofthe geometry involving the building of the surfacic model, and the volumic model, (2) the discretization of the PDE, and the solving ofthe Iinear system, (3) the visualisation of the results. GOCAD appears to be weil adapted to the geometrical representation of the 3D objects, especially using 3DGRID and TSolid. However, it appears that several other higher level objects have to be defined to allow an integration of the modeler and solver with GOCAD . Among others things, it is suggested to use a Medium object Iinked to a medium interface, a Property object Iinked to a property interface, and other basic tools such as element object. The functionalities concerning these higher level objects have been developed in a separate package, cailed TherMass, fully compatible with GOCAD output or input files.
