Elements for measuring the complexity of 3D structural models: topology and geometry

in: Proc. 33rd Gocad Meeting, Nanacy, France, ASGA

Abstract

Accurate modeling of 3D complex geological structures can have a major impact on forecasting and managing natural resources and predicting seismic and geomechanical hazards. However, the terms “structurally complex” are often used in a qualitative and subjective way, making the comparison of the capabilities and performances of various modeling methods or software difficult. In this paper, we consider the notion of structural complexity from several perspectives and argue that this complexity can be characterized using general purpose metrics computed on 3D sealed structural models. These measures of topological and geometrical properties of a model are made at a given resolution and can be combined into several classification metrics addressing various aspects of structural complexity and the associated modeling challenges. The proposed metrics are computed on a set of 3D synthetic structural models which can be used as benchmark models for geomodeling algorithms.
