About Jean-Laurent Mallet

Professor Jean-Laurent Mallet's scientific career started in 1968 where he got a MS degree from the Ecole Nationale Superieure de Geologie (Nancy-France). He diversified his interests into mathematics, finishing his research education with a PhD in applied mathematics at the (“Institut National Polytechnique de Lorraine”. ). In his early years, he worked with the French research institute CNRS in the field of numerical data analysis and automated mapping. In 1981, he was nominated Professor at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Géologie, from which he directed teaching and research in mathematics and computer sciences applied to geology.
In 1989 he launched the gOcad research project, supported by a consortium of more than 25 oil&gas companies and 100 universities and public research institutions around the world.
In 1997 with a group of his old students, Pr Mallet created the Earth-Decision-Science Company which merged with Paradigm-Geophysical in 2006.
In 2006, professor Mallet retired from the university but not from research:

  • In 2006 he was nominated “Emeritus professor” by the (Institut National Polytechnique de Lorraine and “Senior Research Fellow” By Paradigm-Geophysical.
  • In 2007 he served as “Distinguished Lecturer” for the AAPG (American Association of Petroleum Geologists )
  • In 2008 and 2009 he served as “Distinguished Lecturer” for the EAGE
  • He his currently dedicating his research efforts to the development and applications of a brand new unified mathematical model of the subsurface based on a “time/space curvilinear coordinate system” that he calls “GeoChron”. This mathematical model is the heart of the new generation of geomodeling and interpretation software (SKUA) developed by Paradigm.
Jean-Laurent Mallet is the author of more than 100 articles and a dozen of patents in applied mathematics, modeling, interpretationand computing. He wrote several books in English:“Geomodeling” (600 pages) published in 2002 by Oxford University Press, “Numerical-Earth-Models” (147 pages) published in 2008 by the EAGE and “Elements of Mathematical Geology: the GeoChron Model” (374 pages) published in 2014 by the EAGE . During his academic career, he also directed more than 50 PhD thesis in the field of numerical geomodeling and interpretation and reached the highest possible title in the French academic system (Professeur de classe exceptionnelle deuxieme echelon).
Pr Mallet is a member of EAGESPEIAMG and SEG. He received several awards during the last decade:
  • In 1997 he was awarded the Italgas prize an Italian prize by European scientific authorities,
  • In 2000 he was awarded the SPE Anthony Lucas Gold Medal by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE)
  • In 2003 he was awarded the “Grand Prix Dolomieux” by the French Academy of Sciences
  • In 2003, he was awarded the grade of Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Freiberg in Germany.
  • In 2005 he was awarded the “Marcel Roubault Prize” by the Société Géologique de France.
  • At SEG 2009, he received the SEG Distinguished Achievement Award presented to the Gocad Consortium by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG).
  • At EAGE 2010, he received the EAGE Erasmus Award. delivered by the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE)
