Fault uncertainty and ranking in tetrahedral models

in: Proc. 27th Gocad Meeting, Nancy

Abstract

Geometric uncertainty linked to faults is not easy to take into account when building reservoir models. A small change in geometry can have a considerable impact on fluid flow simulations because faults facilitate flow or act as barriers. Building faulted models is often a long and complicated process, so studying the impact of fault uncertainty is not yet part of the regular reservoir studying workflow. The method explained in this paper is to use small perturbation on fault geometry in tetrahedral grids to create several models from the initial model. Perturbations are computed as scalar fields on the fault surfaces and the tetrahedral model is modified to take these perturbations into account while maintaining geometrical and geological consistency. Several models can thus be created quickly with slightly perturbed fault geometry. The models are then ranked according to several criteria.
