Which is first? The model or the mesh?

in: 2018 Ring Meeting, ASGA

Abstract

Usual modeling techniques via the combination of stratigraphic grid/geologic grid and geostatistics and then upscaling fail to model adequately reservoir heterogeneities. In particular they tend to pixelate thin shale barriers which becomes discontinuous leading to increase permeability, leading to artificially increased recoverable volumes. We propose a new method which follows the principle of sequence stratigraphy to model mesh and properties together, creating more realistic geologic models and keeping thin layers intact.
