Abstract

Stratigraphic well correlation is a critical step of basin and reservoir analysis workflows. Numerous automated correlation methods that consider information along the wellbore have been developed. In this paper, we propose a new method which also uses interwell information extracted from seismic surveys to constrain well correlation. The presented stratigraphic well correlation method is based on the iterative Dynamic Time Warping algorithm which allows correlation between several wells. These correlations are built according to rules used to compute the likelihood of the correlation between stratigraphic units. To perform well correlation using interwell seismic information, two new rules are introduced. A first rule is based on a 3D scalar field where gradient is orthogonal to horizons extracted from seismic. Then, the likelihood of the correlation between two stratigraphic units is calculated as the difference between the mean of the scalar field values at considered units. A second rule is developed in order to compute the likelihood of the correlation between stratigraphic units and the likelihood of unconformity. This rule is based on seismic attribute which highlights the convergence of reflectors on seismic data.
