Implicit 3D Model building from remote sensing and sparse field data. Application to the La Popa Basin, Mexico

Abstract

The wealth of remote sensing data freely available from the web opens new perspectives for preparing eld studies by creating draft 3D geological models. Typically, it is possible to obtain Digital Elevation Models and satellite images with a resolution in the range of 10-100 meters. Once these data have been georeferenced, it is therefore possible to compute automatically dips from at irons and incised valleys. Together with picks of the main relief markers, these dips provide extremely valuable information to create rst-order geological models using implicit techniques on tetrahedral models. These models can then be re ned and updated easily using eld measurements and interpretive maps and cross-sections. We demonstrate this global work ow on a structurally complex basin in the Sierra Madre Oriental, Northeastern Mexico, and discuss avenues for future improvements.
