Abstract

Well planning has always been a time consuming process. For structural modeling, reservoir characterization and simulation involves a numerical model which is merely a representation of the actual knowledge of reality. When the project team hands it over to the drilling and production department, it is time to come down to reality. A new life starts for the project and brand new issues arise. All the information gathered during the preliminary study must be passed along with the model in order to find appropriate solution. Uncertainty is surely a large part of it. Collaborative work is the solution that has been implemented in recent years. This approach relies on a shared object: the integrated earth model. Well plan is now fully part of this model. This approach has been integrated in gOcad. A case study is included and shows how uncertainty analysis can guide effectively optimal well design.
