Abstract

The understanding and prediction of the position and geometry of karst conduits is a challenge for various disciplines of Earth Sciences, particularly for hydrogeology, civil engineering and carbonate reservoir modeling, for which reaching or avoiding dissolution voids is of high significance. In this paper, we report our investigations to design an integrated approach for 3D characterization and modeling of known cave networks. It consists of integrating available information in 3D geological model; morphometric analysis of voids based on medial axis of the cave network; and application of stochastic object-distance simulation to generate 3D models of cave networks. The motivation of this work is to set the basis for a methodology which enables quantitative analysis of conduits geometry and their spatial organization. In this paper we present first results of an application of this approach on the Han-sur-Lesse cave network (Ardennes, Belgium).
