Abstract:

Interpreting salt is a complex and time-consuming task for seismic interpreters, as they have to get by on seismic imaging limitations. Over the last decades, considerable progresses have been achieved in seismic acquisition and processing, which motivated numerous works on the automation of salt interpretation. The approaches proposed in the literature however focus on generating a single deterministic interpretation - the "best" one - and do not enable the assessment of the different structural scenarios admissible considering the uncertainties underlying the seismic data.

This seminary is divided into two parts. I will first make a review of the different automatic salt interpretation methods proposed in the literature; then I will present you my ongoing work, which aims at proposing a methodology to assess the structural uncertainties related to salt interpretation.
